The Head of Government and president of the Social Democratic Party is a lawyer. Among his more important public functions he has been: Minister of Finance, Trade and Industry (1990-1992); Member of Parliament, elected successively from 1992 to 2009; member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (1995-2008); president of the Social Democratic parliamentary group (2001-2009); vice-president of the European subcommittee on human rights (2004); president of the European subcommittee on the fight against terrorism (2005-2006).
